The articles on this page grew out of a cybersecurity course plan I wrote for a client in 2017. Technology has changed considerably since then, so I've dusted off the original material, discarded what time has made obsolete, and updated the rest for today's computers, smartphones and Internet.
Fortunately, you don't need to become a computer expert to protect yourself online. These articles explain the threats in plain English—from malware, phishing and ransomware to passwords, passkeys, backups and the everyday habits that provide surprisingly effective protection.
The Internet is far too useful to approach with fear, but it's also no place to wander around carelessly. A little knowledge, a little skepticism and a few good habits go a long way.
So, borrowing the memorable advice the desk sergeant used to give the officers before they headed out onto the streets on NYPD Blue: Be careful out there.
